How to Apply

Applying for Fulbright in Pakistan is handled by USEFP, and it involves several steps in a competitive process.

Preparation is Key

GRE General Test: You'll need to take this before you apply, so don’t wait too long to schedule it. Make sure your scores are ready by the deadline, and try to aim for at least 145 in each section.

Research Fields and Universities: Think about what you want to study and find out more about programs and faculty in the U.S. You don’t have to get accepted into a university first, but knowing what’s out there will help your application stand out.

Identify Referees: Pick three individuals who really know your work, whether academic or professional. They should be able to write you solid recommendation letters. Give them a heads up early and share your CV along with some key points about your application.

Online Application

Applications typically open in November and close in late February/early March each year. For exact dates, visit the USEFP website (www.usefp.org).

Complete the online application form: Fill out all sections accurately and completely.

Project Statement/Study Objective: This section is really important. You need to explain your research or study clearly, why it matters, how you plan to do it, and how it connects with your future goals and benefits Pakistan.

Personal Statement: Write an engaging essay about your personal experiences, what drives you, your leadership skills, and how the Fulbright experience will make a difference for you and your community.

Academic Transcripts: Please upload scanned copies of all your official transcripts and degrees. It’s best if your documents are attested by HEC, but copies verified by your university are okay for now. Don't forget to include a brief explanation of your university's grading scale.

GRE Score Report: Make sure to submit your official GRE score report. You can usually send in unofficial scores (like scanned copies) when you apply, but we'll need the official scores later on.

CV/Resume: This is the document where you list your education, work history, activities outside of class, and any publications if you're applying for a PhD.

Letters of Recommendation: Your referees will send their letters straight to USEFP using the online system. Make sure they know when the deadline is.

Selection Process (March to September)

Round 1 (Initial Screening): Applications are evaluated for completeness and minimal eligibility.

Round 2 (Shortlisting): Complete submissions are extensively reviewed for academic merit, project proposal quality, leadership potential, and commitment to Pakistan. Shortlisted candidates are then invited to interviews.

Round 3 (Interviews June-August): An expert panel from the United States and Pakistan conducts in-person or virtual interviews. This is where you express your vision, respond to questions regarding your proposal, and show your eligibility for the program.

Round 4 (Final Selection - September): The finalists and alternates are determined. Successful candidates are notified via email.

Post-Selection Process (October onwards)

University Placement: USEFP collaborates with the Institute of International Education (IIE) in the United States to gain admissions to appropriate U.S. universities based on your academic profile and planned course of study.

TOEFL/Duolingo Test: If not already offered, qualified candidates may be asked to take an English proficiency test issued by USEFP.

Medical Examination: A medical examination is necessary.

Visa Application: USEFP provides assistance with the J-1 visa application procedure.

Pre-Departure Orientation: Grantees must attend an orientation session before flying to the United States.
