&nbsp;This course will explore the recent story of Muslim migration and settlement in Britain within the framework of historical links often termed as &lsquo;Islam&rsquo; and the &lsquo;West&rsquo;.
This one-day course offers a well-rounded and inter-disciplinary introduction to a range of questions and predicaments &ndash; in areas such as law, media, gender, education and policy &ndash; that have emerged as Muslim presence has increased in Britain. Discussions around the historical, ideological and economic roots of Muslim identity formation will constitute a substantial part of the course.
The course will consider Muslim historical traditions and Western cultural frameworks, to explore the different ideas of what it means to be a 'Muslim in the West'. These explorations will serve as a basis for debating the future directions of Muslims in Britain.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course participants are expected to:

 <li>Know about the broad contours of Muslim history in Britain</li>
 <li>Understand the diversity within Muslim groups</li>
 <li>Be aware of the key issues confronting Muslims in the West and how they are engaging with them</li>
 <li>Be familiar with the processes of legal, social and cultural integration of Muslims in Britain</li>
 <li>Know about the different ways in which young Muslims are producing forms of citizenship and political participation on the basis of their religious identity</li>
 <li>Be able to reflect upon the possible futures of Muslims in Britain</li>

 Who should attend?
 The course is suitable for anyone interested gaining an accessible yet academically sound understanding of the history, present concerns and possible futures of Muslims in Britain and the West in general. It will be particularly useful for a range of professionals &ndash; teachers, lawyers, bankers, social workers, civil servants - who engage with Muslim communities in various capacities.
 AKU-ISMC is non denominational and welcomes participants of all backgrounds.
 Course Venue
 The Course will be held at AKU-ISMC's premises at 210 Euston Road, London, United Kingdom, NW1 2DA . The Institute's premises are situated in the heart of London, with exellent transport links and close to a number of educational facilities, including the British Museum, British Library and University of London.
