&nbsp;Electronic Health Information Management in Hospital & Primary Health Care
Continuing Education Programme, Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS), in collaboration with Department of Continuing Professional Education, Aga Khan University (AKU), Karachi, Pakistan is offering a short course on&nbsp;&quot;Electronic Health Information Management in Hospital & Primary Health Care&quot;. &nbsp;This course is offered first time, starts from&nbsp;November 1 - 6, 2010, at the Aga Khan University.
Introduction of Introduction of Electronic Health Information Management or Health Informatics 
Health informatics combines the fields of medicine, information science and information technology to formulate various systems for generating, validating, securing and integrating health-related data. The purpose is to deliver effective, integrated, and high quality health care to patients. It involves bringing together various resources, techniques and systems to maximize the use of the wealth of medical knowledge, technological advances and drug breakthroughs that are available. It is used in a wide variety of health-related fields, including dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, medical research clinical care and public health.
Since the applications of HI and their design depend on the needs of the local communities and hospitals, it is important to design educational programs that focus on implementing internationally accredited knowledge within the local context. Also, since HI by its nature, is a mix of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Health, it is important to develop multi-disciplinary training programs for healthcare providers, managers and IT professionals working in the healthcare environment. This kind of mix will not only facilitate mutual learning of the field, but should also improve planning of new HI initiatives.&nbsp;
Rationale of the Course 
It is important to develop core understanding among the healthcare providers and managers about the importance, technology, applications, and utility of Health Information in a technology-supported environment.&nbsp;
Objectives of the Course 
Key objectives of the short course in Health Informatics are as follows:

 <li class="InternalPageFonts" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-size: 12px; ">Participants are able to apply knowledge about the applications of ICT in health environment, especially related to HI in clinical and community settings.</li>
 <li class="InternalPageFonts" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-size: 12px; ">Participants can list down and understand different components of an Electronic Health Record, and be able to select what is relevant and important in their own environments.</li>
 <li class="InternalPageFonts" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-size: 12px; ">Participants are able to introduce various components of HI business plan required to design a sustainable HI program.</li>
 <li class="InternalPageFonts" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-size: 12px; ">Participants have the opportunity to acquire detailed information and hands-on experience in the field.</li>

Educational Strategies 
A mix of local, national and international faculty will be invited to teach this course. The national faculty will be invited to Karachi to participate physically in the activities of the course, whereas the international faculty will be asked to conduct their sessions virtually, using eLearning resources.

Clinicians and other health care workers; Managers, IT professionals, Informatics researchers, government health care representatives, policy makers, and others who want to learn more about Health Informatics in their professional practice.
Medium of Instruction 
Medium of instruction of the course is English. Participants are expected to be proficient enough to comprehend, read and write in English language.

Course Fee&nbsp; 
The tuition fee of the course is Rs 16,900/- (US $ 215/- applicable for international participants) which covers classroom instructions, course material, and food & refreshment during working hours. Due to limited seats, participants will be selected on first come first serve basis.
Duration of the Workshop 
The duration of this course is 6 full days.

Course Facilitators
Dr Shariq Khoja 
Dr Shariq Khoja is a Medical graduate of Aga Khan University (AKU), with Masters and PhD in eHealth from University of Calgary, Canada. Dr Khoja works as Assistant Professor with department of CHS and coordinates eHealth Plan for Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi and the Aga Khan Development Network. He has extensive background and interest in using eHealth technologies to facilitate health care services and education. His research interests focus on creating evidence and policies to guide the implementation of eHealth in developing countries. Dr Khoja is currently leading the project called &lsquo;PAN Asian Collaboration for evidence-based eHealth Adoption and Application (PANACeA)', which supports collaborative research in 17 Asian countries to create evidence for eHealth implementation. Dr Khoja chairs the e-Learning Technical Committee, and is member of eHealth task force and Skills lab group at AKU. Dr Khoja is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary.
Dr Zahid Ali Faheem 
Dr Faheem is a Medical doctor, with post graduate degree in Family Medicine, and diplomas in Program Management and Quality Improvement. He has extensive experience working in leading positions in the International NGOs,&nbsp;managing programmes&nbsp;such as HMIS, health promotion, Staged Diabetes management and&nbsp;Integrated Management of Childhood Diseases.&nbsp;
Dr Hammad Durrani 
Dr Hammad Durrani is the Research Manager for PANACeA initiative. Hammad is a trained physician with Masters in Health Policy and Management. He has been involved in conducting the systematic review on Telehealth in Asia, and will continue to take this responsibility for other projects as well.
Mr Saleem Qureshi 
Mr Saleem Qureshi is Manager Software Development&nbsp; in Information Technology Division of Aga Khan University, Karachi. He has done his BE in Electronics Engineering&nbsp; from NED University and MS in Computer Science and Engineering from Boston University, USA. Saleem has sound business knowledge and extensive experience of working in a large Healthcare environment encompassing the effective and efficient use of Information Technology across all patient care functions. He focuses on the development and support of Hospital Information Systems and utilizes his experience to improve upon patient care, research and education processes at Aga Khan University. He has successfully led and participated in many software development and implementation projects for various clinical and administrative departments of Aga Khan University, Karachi.
