Description

Study abroad is a great experience and all students I know seemed to have the best time. But there are still cases when this adventurous and fun journey can turn into biggest mistake of your life. This depends on your objectives behind going abroad. You may say that you are going for quality higher education and to learn and groom more in a new and more creative environment but everyone has something else in mind.

Of course, you can do more than just studying. You will make friends, you will have fun and most probably also some tourism. But that is just aside with the studies and definitely not without it. I always promote studying abroad, however this time, I would suggest you to just give it up if you want to study abroad for the one of the reasons mentioned below. If any of these happened to be your motive for studying abroad, you will definitely regret your decisions sooner or later.

1 - Just Want to Get Out of the Country

Some people, for some reasons, just want to leave their country as soon as possible. This is specially the case in countries like Pakistan and India. Because of unstable politics, unemployment, lack of opportunities and bad society; a lot of youngsters look for any possible way to get out of there.

SEE ALSO: What are Study Abroad Destinations and Their Ranks? See All 50 of Them Including Pakistan

Though most study abroad destinations are developed countries with good quality of living, this decision can be regretful for you later. Even if you go abroad, there is no guaranty you can settle there permanently and eventually you will have to come back. Moreover, not necessarily your destination will be as you expect. If your chief goal isn’t studying, you won’t be able to study hence failing and again ending back in your homeland.

2 - Want to Earn Some Money

There are more opportunities in developed countries to earn money. You will find lots of jobs even for students and probably earn many times more than your country. But going abroad to study and hoping to save money is irrational. You may get a job and even if you manage it nicely with your studies, you can just forget to save any money. You will barely afford your tuition fee and living with that salary. Not all countries allow international students to work and some that do allow, only permit 4 hours a day to work that is if it doesn’t affect your studies. You can earn after completing your studies if you get permission to stay.

3 - Looking for Respect

Some may say that their own society is very narrow minded or may be filled with illiterates and they don’t have any respect here. So if they go abroad for education, they will live among educated nice people who will respect them because they are guest. At least, this is what they think. I will just say snap out it.

It’s a given fact that most study abroad destinations have peaceful environment with law and order. But you are not going to a fairy land though. If you don’t have any respect in your home, just don’t expect it from strangers. However, you may get to face and tolerate some racism. If you need respect just change yourself.

4 - To Enjoy a Party Life

I am sorry to break it to you but real life is not exactly as described in Van Wilder movie. Some young minds think they will be able to live a loose life partying hard and having fun if they go abroad for education. Youngster’s open parties are more common in some study abroad destinations like United States and United Kingdom but not as much as you think. You will get the opportunities to attend such events after creating a social network. There are some parties organized at weekends but most students don’t even get the time to attend them. Some who may be able to manage some leisure time may not be able to afford them. And for an Asian foreigner, this can be a little more than just difficult.

SEE ALSO: What are Greek Houses Fraternity and Sororities in Foreign Universities

5 - To Look for a Wife

I have some information and counseling for such students who want to go abroad as student to look for wife. First of all, SERIOUSLY? Pardon for the informal language but You gotta be freakin’ kidding me! Look for one in your country, in your own culture who can at least fulfill your and your family’s expectations.

The reason one might want to marry a foreigner is that he/she is either still juvenile or want a green card (for permanent residency). You will first be failure in studies if this is your goal. Second it is not as easy as it sounds because people are usually conscious with foreigners. Now last but not least of all, let me just say it this way; if you can’t get in your own country, you really think you will get one in a foreign country where no one even knows you.

6 - Spend Some Alone Time

If you have ever lived in a hostel or shared flat, you would know there is no such as privacy in this life. You want to spend some alone time, go visit some rural areas of your country. If you want to spend a busy life then I would recommend studying abroad. Just forget any alone time, peace of mind or silence in students’ residence.

SEE ALSO: 4 Types Student who Benefit Most Studying Abroad! Are you One of Them

7 - Want to Run Away from Family

People don’t really value what they have until they lose it. The biggest treasure one can have is family. Unfortunately, some youngsters don’t understand it. They dislike their families because of some lacks or faults they may have. Most students who go away from family usually end up homesick. Some realize their mistake sooner while some get it too late which they regret for the rest of their life. Study has to be your main goal when going abroad for studies. It requires a great deal of time and energy and if one is not prepare for it, he/ she will fail.

<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">Usama Ahmed Awan

<span style="font-family: "times new roman", times, serif;">The Editor of StudyAbroad.pk, Usama is a BZU studied Software Engineer, now a Teacher, Article Writer, Educational Counselor and Journalist.
