Description

Study abroad is a big step that requires a lot of sacrifices and huge change in lifestyle. If you are going to a foreign country, you should know that it is not your home and that you are just like a guest there. If you behave well, you will be well hosted. On contrast, any sort of hostility or bad attitude can sabotage the relation between you and the host country.

You must have heard analyst, like myself, saying that Pakistani are totally different in behavior and attitude once they leave their homeland. In foreign countries, they act there is no one more ethical and decent then them. Hypocrisy as it may be, it is a wise thing to do though being like that in your home country won’t hurt either. In this article, Study Abroad team has discussed why you should behave your best while study abroad and how you can do it.

SEE ALSO: How to Select Right University to Study Abroad

Why Behave Best

Expelled from University:

Bad behavior is never appreciated no matter where you are in the world. However, not all countries are like yours where you have more rights and some good links to save you. Any sort of misconduct will directly have you expelled from the univeristy. They will welcome you with a warm heart and provide you every facility you need, however, it will definitely won’t be tolerated if you do bad in return.

You Will Be Deported Back:

Getting expelled from a university might sound like a big deal but that is not all to it. International students always have special care of the government as they are guest under their protection. If they see that you are not blending in the environment, they will just deport you back to your country before you get yourself and them in a bigger trouble.

You Can’t Apply for Permanent Residency:

Even if you are not expelled from the institute and have saved yourself from deporting back to your home, this one loss is a definite to be faced. Once you have got a criminal or police record, whether it is a little case, you just lost your eligibility to apply for the permanent residency of the country. Winning the permanent residency of study abroad destination is in mind of every student while choosing the country. Just one little mistake and that dream of yours went to trash.

SEE ALSO: Best Ways to Save Money While Studying Abroad

How to Behave Best

By now you must have got an idea of why behaving nice is very important during your stay abroad. Now I am sharing with you the most basic and simple tips to make yourself look good in front of other and no one will even feel a bit of offence.

Be a Guest:

If it is not your home, yet you are staying there and it is decided that it is also temporary then what does that make you? You are a Guest! Since, you know that you are a guest then why not act like one.

When you go somewhere as a guest, you instinctively behave good because you know that it is just for a little while. You should notice it when you go to your aunt or uncle’s house. You act like there no one more gentle and nicer than you. You even decline they money they offer you, I mean who would otherwise. Well, just think of yourself as a guest and innocence will automatically come to you.

Have Cultural Awareness:

Before we start the main discussion, tell me a thing. How would you feel if someone offered you a drink or something to eat in the month of Ramzan while you are fasting? Even if you control yourself and respond gently, you will still feel a little offended that other one should have known about this. Other one will also be, without a doubt, embarrassed.

Now back to my point, imagine if something like that is to happen to you in a foreign country where you are the other guy. There might not be Ramzan but every country has their own cultural beliefs and events. This time it is also possible that the one offended may not even respond gently and as for you, you will have to be ashamed. Now, if you don’t want something like to happen, I suggest that you should know the basic cultural background of the country you are going in. You should know about their religion, their beliefs and their festivals and events.

SEE ALSO: See Latest Ranks of Pakistan’s Top Universities in THE World Ranking 2017

Know the Native Language:

Here is another imaginative case scenario, consider you are a shopkeeper and someone comes to buy something but he/she does not know your language. You will concentrate hard, pay attention, brainstorm and waste a lot of time in understanding the request, how would you feel. Here is another case, you met someone through a mutual friend. He/She shakes your hand then says something in an alien language that you don’t understand. After that you are wondering whether it was a good wish or did the he/she just cursed you. Even someone don’t mind, one wouldn’t prefer these situations.

You won’t necessarily be going to an English country. There are many Non-English good study abroad destinations where you might lead to in future. So, try to first learn at least the basic native language of the country to avoid any situation that may be uncomfortable for your host country natives.

If you are going an English country, try to perfect your accent according to that country as USA, UK and Australia all have different accents in same English language. We don’t want anyone to feel like we are making fun of their language by talking in a weird or wrong accent.

<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">By Usama Ahmed Awan

<span style="font-family: "times new roman", times, serif;">The Editor of StudyAbroad.pk, Usama is a BZU studied Software Engineer, now a Teacher, Article Writer, Educational Counselor and Journalist.
