Description

Transfer of credits in an institution abroad is one of the major and important steps you take during your educational life. It is most important that you know all the policies and the instructions of your home as well as the abroad institution that are made for the credit transfer. It is the core and final decision of your home university that how many credits can be transferred abroad and how they will be treated i.e. major credit, minor credit or elective credit etc.

Students must consult the academic advisor in the abroad university before applying to transfer to know about the do‘s and don’ts of the process. As each school has different restrictions of what type of credit can be transferred and what not. So in order to avoid such circumstances after you have chosen the institution you must know all the policies and rules. Although the rules and policies to transfer the credit from the home university to abroad study program may vary from institution to institution but there are some common steps that every student has to take in order to complete the task.

Following are the important steps to be taken in order to have a successful transfer of credits.

Pre approval:

· First of all speak to the academic advisor to get the information about the courses and the credits you want to transfer and to know the information about how these credits will be treated

· Secondly have the information and the details of the courses you want to study abroad. The program sponsor may be able to give you the course description or the outline syllabus of the courses you are interested in.

· Get informed about how the courses will fulfill the degree requirements.

· Get a signed pre approval form from your home university and details about the credits you want to transfer and the courses you plan to study abroad.

During program:

· Ensure that the host university will send the transcript to the study abroad office at the end of the program

· If some of the courses are not approved, request for the approval of the previously not approved courses.

· Work on your grades as only those courses will be transferred whose grades are “C” or above. So in order to get your credits transferred it is important to attend the classes and get according to the university standard and expectations.

· Student must submit a completed course approval form for each course.

After the program:

· Find out about the transcript received by the study abroad office from the host university.

· Students may need to submit a syllabus to the institution if the previously applied courses were not approved on the course approval form.

· Students may need to speak to their academic advisor to ensure that the credits are transferred appropriately and the grades will be calculated in the GPA.

· Students may need to get the syllabus, working material, essays, examination back as they may be needed later in any case.

These are all the requirements that the students may be needed in order to transfer the credits for study abroad but the decisions and the final approvals are solely based on the institution themselves.
