Choosing a study abroad destination is a difficult task and it’s a decision that could possibly change your life forever. So it’s important to make an informed judgement and take everything into consideration. Sometimes, this just isn’t possible though. It takes time, effort and sometimes quite a bit of money to discover what destinations are the best for studying abroad. That’s why we’ve done the hard work, discovering where we think is best to study abroad in 2013, so you don’t have to. Here’s our list of the best study abroad destinations for 2013, is your top choice on the list?

<a style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; background-color: transparent; color: rgb(50, 144, 162); text-decoration: none; " href="http://blog.studylink.com/2012/07/the-10-best-study-abroad-destinations-2013/#united-kingdom" title="1. United Kingdom

Top of our list for study abroad destinations in 2013 is the UK. Offering notable alumni, such as Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking and Mahatma Gandhi, universities in the UK have produced more than their fair share of academic greats, and it’s a reputation that it still holds onto today. From the Scottish highlands to the financial hub of London, universities scatter the island, teaching and inspiring the future leaders of the world.

The difficulty many students find when selecting a study abroad destination is in fact where in the UK to study. With the UK consisting of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, it’s often difficult to narrow down your selection, so if you’re unsure of where to study in the UK, take a look we’ve previously looked at the top UK student cities and the top alternative UK student cities.

Find out more about studying in England, Scotland and London.

2. Canada

From the Victorian architecture in Vancouver to the Parisian-style streets of Montreal, Canada offers diversity like no other. Toronto has been described as “New York, run by the Swiss” whilst Victoria in British Columbia is one of the most British cities in North America. Its size helps, at 10 million square kilometres it has something (and somewhere) for anyone wanting to study abroad. Impossible to dislike, Canada has a slice of home for everyone, making it the perfect place to study, whilst still having its own strong identity. Just make sure you pack your winter clothes, as it currently boasts the title of the world’s coldest country!

Canadian universities and institutions are amongst the best in the world and offer the choice to learn in either of the official languages (English and French). The likes of Acadia University, College Militaire Royale and Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal are highly regarded institutions and Canadian degrees are internationally recognised.

Get information and find out what it’s like to study abroad in Canada.

3. Australia

The country down under offers itself as a great study abroad destination with almost 50 universities to pick between. A friendly environment and comfortable climate combined with its world-class universities and favourable employment prospects makes this a highly desirable place to study, especially for students who speak English. Popular amongst Asian students due to the geographical proximity, Australia also attracts students from Europe and North & South America who want to get a bit further away from home. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter where you come from though, as the friendly country is accommodating to all. Melbourne, Sydney and Perth are the most popular places to study in the country, although there are plenty of other cities and towns to choose from.

Find out what it is like to study in Australia.

4. Netherlands

A truly diverse country that is embracing multiculturalism, choosing the Netherlands as a great place to study wasn’t hard. Twelve of the top 200 universities in the world are to be found in the Netherlands, quite impressive considering the country only has around 30 institutions in total, meaning the Dutch have a disproportionate amount of world-class universities. Higher education in the Netherlands is also subsidised by the government, allowing students to study there without as much financial backing as the other best study destinations require. The country has great links to neighbouring European countries and cities, allowing you to see more of the continent before you leave. Whilst Amsterdam offers itself as the most popular city to study in the Netherlands, smaller cities such as Eindhoven, Lisse and Den Haag are equally as good.

Get more information on studying in the Netherlands.

5. Singapore

The small country of Singapore certainly packs a punch when it comes to its British-based education system. Despite only having eight universities, Singapore has been regularly regarded as a leader in international education and as the country continues to develop, it looks as if Singapore’s position amongst the other global players will continue to prosper. Singapore’s tuition grant, available to graduates who have been offered a place on a course, makes it easier to self-fund study in the country. It is required for students to work for a Singapore-registered company for at least three years after completing a degree in order to ensure the country benefits from the skills of those it educates. It is schemes such as this one that has seen Singapore propel itself to the tops of the leader boards worldwide over the past few years.

Find out more about studying abroad in Singapore.

6. Italy

Boasting the oldest university in the world (University of Bologna), Italy comes in sixth on our list of best places to study abroad. Offering more than just great pasta, pizza and wine, Italy is a great place to study with well over 100 universities, some of which are world renowned leaders in their field such as the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, European School of Economics and European University Institute. Italy is famed for its history and inventions, from the leaning tower of Pisa to the dictionary, both are Italian products, but unfairly it’s perhaps less well known for its excellent educational institutions.

Find out more about studying in Europe.

7. New Zealand

New Zealand’s eight universities provide an internationally recognised education, which is attracting more and more overseas students every year. The cost of studying in the country is favourable too, in comparison to some of the other big destinations featured in this list and you can expect a high standard of living, along with friendly locals and a pleasant climate. New Zealand’s universities reputation for independent thinking make it an ideal destination for those who wish to study postgraduate degrees, particularly research-based qualifications. The next decision to make once you’ve decided to study in New Zealand, is which island you want to study on?
Get more information on studying in New Zealand.

8. France

France is a country known for its cafe terraces, village-square markets and chalk boards that line the cobbled streets. But the cultural capital of the world has much more to offer, especially for study abroad students. With over 80 universities to choose from, students are spoiled for choice. Paris is an incredibly diverse place, welcoming visitors from all around the world every day and many international students find themselves arriving in Paris and never leaving the city. Paris in fact, was recently announced the best international student student city. The capital of France is a romantic and magical place, even for students with little money. But there is more to France than just its capital. Lyon and Toulouse, along with the other big cities are quickly becoming hotspots for international students, drawn in by their fine art, food, history and welcoming nature. Wherever you choose to study in France, you’ll be sure to make some great friends, discover some incredible wine and taste some of the best food in the world. Just remember to say “Merci”.

For more information about what it’s like to study in France, check out our guide to studying abroad in Europe.

9. USA

Perhaps one of the most diverse countries on the planet, many claim that the United States of America has it all; natural wonders, cultural distinction, busy cities and relaxing natural environments. The fifty states that make up America are all incredibly different, so giving only a few reasons to justify the USA’s position on this list is incredibly difficult. The southern states are renowned for their great food and music scenes, whilst the east/west coast rivalry shows just how proud the locals are of their neighbourhoods. America is a great place to study, and would feature higher on our list if it wasn’t for the high cost of living and course fees. That being said, by studying in America, you are enhancing your academic career within one of the best education systems in the world and increasing your job prospects by working with some of the top professionals. San Francisco, Boston and New York are all popular destinations, but with over 2,600 to choose between, the possibilities really are endless.

Live the American dream, study in the USA.

10. Germany

Last, but by no means least, is Germany. We included Germany in our list of best study abroad locations because of its contrasting nature. Many destinations are suited to students who prefer to dance the night away, whilst others are better for those who spend their time in the coffee shops and museums. Germany caters effortlessly for both. Berlin offers an edgy and vibrant student lifestyle whilst Munich provides a more traditional take on the country with its unique Bavarian culture. Munich is also the host city for Oktoberfest, one of the world’s great parties. The German government also provide subsidies for domestic and international students, similar to the Netherlands, making it an affordable option too. Germany is a great place for those who love to get outdoors too, even within the cities there are plenty of short walks and streets to explore, but if you can manage to get away from the hustle and bustle, you can find yourself very quickly on a ski-slope or hiking through magnificent landscapes.

A country covered in history, Germany rounds off our list of the best places to study abroad. Get more information about studying in Germany in our guide to study in Europe.

Was your favourite study abroad destination in our list?
