	A KPMG submission to the Federal Government has identified a future labour shortage in the agricultural sector, naming two major South Australian farming regions, the Eyre Peninsula and the Mallee, as examples. This is due to an increasing trend of younger workers leaving to take jobs in the mining sector, and half of the nation&#39;s farmers preparing to retire in the next decade.

	As a result of these trends, Australia will have to import Asian workers to fill the gap. The Productivity Commission has conservatively estimated the sector will generate more than 32,000 new&nbsp;Australia annually.

	&quot;There is a considerable risk that there will be a lack of experienced farmers to train younger farmers who will be critical to driving productivity improvements and adapting to challenges such as climate change, increased competition and an increase on focus on the environmental impacts of farming,&#39;&#39; the report says.

	According to the report, in the long term, agricultural skills gaps would inevitably lead to the need to source labor from overseas migration and Asia would be an important contributor to fill the gap. The government would need to develop&nbsp;Australian immigration&nbsp;policies with Asian countries to bridge this shortage.

	The Federal Government acknowledged &quot;the challenges presented by an ageing farming workforce&#39;&#39; and was investing money into skills development in areas including agriculture.

	Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Sid Sidebottom said the Government was &quot;working very closely with industry, the National Farmers Federation and with education providers&#39;&#39;.

	&quot;We all need to do a much better job in promoting agriculture to young Australians and explaining the vast spectrum of career opportunities available,&quot; he added.
