Description

It is to be informed that TOEFL iBT is now officially the shortest English Proficiency Test, as ETS (Education Testing System) announced some interesting and exciting changes in the pattern of TOEFL iBT. ETS announced that these changes are applicable for the English proficiency tests from 26th July 2023 onwards. This shortened TOEFL iBT aims to provide test takers with better test experience by making the English proficiency test shorter and easier to attempt. Amit Sevak, CEO of ETS, emphasizes that these enhancements have been developed with customers and stakeholders in mind. TOEFL has been an industry standard for almost six decades, and these improvements further solidify its position as a trusted and reliable English-language proficiency test.

Changes That Have Been Made To TOEFL iBT

Following are the changes ETS has made related to TOEFL iBT Test:

Shortened TOEFL iBT Test

The TOEFL iBT test has become shorter, taking less than two hours to complete instead of the previous three hours. This change has been possible due to streamlined instructions and navigation throughout the test, the replacement of previous independent writing task with a new modern "Writing for an Academic Discussion" task, a shorter Reading section and removing unscored test questions.

Simplified Registration Process

Test takers can now create an account and register for a TOEFL iBT test date more quickly and efficiently than before. Some regions also enjoy additional local payment options for added convenience.

Increased Score Transparency

Test takers can now see their official score release date immediately after completing the test. They will also receive immediate notifications of any changes to their score status.

TOEFL iBT Free Practice Test

The CEO of TOEFL also announced that the test takers can find updated versions of the TOEFL iBT Free Practice Test and TOEFL iBT Practice Sets on the TOEFL website. Moreover, in the next few weeks, more test preparation options, both free and paid, will be updated on the website too.

New TOEFL iBT Score Scale

The TOEFL iBT score scale remains the same for score users, allowing their requirements to stay unchanged. The TOEFL test continues to be the most trusted and secure option for score users for various purposes in almost every country except Australia. Due to the recent changes in the pattern, TOEFL test scores are not acceptable for Australian study visas. These TOEFL iBT enhancements aim to improve test takers’ experience by saving them time and reducing their test day anxiety.

Difference Between Old And New TOEFL iBT Test

Test Section

Old TOEFL Test Pattern

New TOEFL Test Pattern

Reading

3 to 4 reading passages
10 questions for each.
Total time = 50 to 70 minutes

2 reading passages
10 questions for each.
Now total time is almost 36 minutes

Listening

3 to 4 lectures with 6 questions each
2 to 3 conversations with 5 questions each + Random unscored questions

3 to 4 lectures, 6 questions each
2 to 3 conversations, 5 questions each.

Speaking

4 speaking tasks, collectively of 17 minutes

No changes have been made to the speaking section

Writing

2 writing tasks of total 50 minutes:

Writing Integrated Task 1, 20 minutes

Writing Independent Task 2, 30 minutes

2 writing tasks now of total 30 minutes:

Integrated Task 1, 20 minutes

Academic Discussion Task 2, 10 minutes
